This spring saw the launch of the Chicago Architecture Center exhibit REFRAMED: The Future of Cities in Wood, which showcases the sustainable, aesthetic, and biophilic benefits of building more cities with mass timber and tall wood construction. The CAC is one of the largest cultural organizations in Chicago and a national leader in the promotion of architecture and design—making it an exceptional partner to reach industry influencers and thought leaders—and serves more than 600,000 guests and audience members annually.

The exhibit has also featured a series of Talking Timber lectures. On April 25, a moderated panel of experts that included a WoodWorks director endorsed the transformative premise of tall wood construction. On August 9, an expert panel including an AWC representative discussed how cities can better embrace tall wooden structures; a September 19 panel examined how we can better design future cities using timber, showcasing entire urban districts rendered in wood.

Exhibits like REFRAMED establish wood as a progressive, innovative material of choice that can help address some of the biggest challenges of our times. REFRAMED is on view until October. To celebrate the six-month run and take advantage of the educational setting, the winners of the 2023 Mass Timber Competition will be announced in a ceremony held at REFRAMED on October 19, during Forest Products Week.

We are proud to be the primary sponsor of REFRAMED, which demonstrates the bright future of sustainable wood products in the built environment. The exhibit not only illustrates the innovative designs mass timber makes possible, it also highlights the natural beauty, strength, and versatility that the material brings to the human experience of architecture.

Co-curated with the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and presented by the SLB, REFRAMED examines the benefits of building with mass timber and features architectural models of existing mass timber projects from around the world. It offers a hands-on opportunity for visitors to experience wood within a glulam pavilion and charred members that demonstrate mass timber’s fire resilience.
