New research conducted in partnership with Forestry Innovation Investment (FII) will study how softwood products are selected for interior appearance applications in commercial and multifamily spaces. A second study will examine consumer attitudes toward wood products and buildings. A third, by Forest Economic Advisors (FEA), will investigate opportunities
in outdoor applications, machine-stress-rated lumber, and offsite construction.

An impossible-to-miss mass timber mock-up, assembled over the course of the three days by show co-host, WoodWorks, granted attendees a unique opportunity to witness the scale and speed of the installation process from first placement to top out.

At what has become the most important annual gathering of participants in the mass timber space, the 2023 International Mass Timber Conference (held March 27–29 in Portland, Oregon) drew stakeholders of an industry buoyed by surging interest in mass timber systems and favorable code developments. Among the estimated 3,000 design and construction professionals attending the event, the predominant sentiment was enthusiasm and confidence, evident in the overflowing lecture halls and booths.

The attention created a prime time for WoodWorks to announce the winners of the 2023 Wood Design Awards,
as well as to distribute the U.S. Mass Timber Construction Manual and associated installer training modules. Released in January of this year, the modules have been downloaded more than 5,000 times so far.

The WoodWorks team was equally active off the floor, hosting 300 people at a mass timber bootcamp before the conference started. WoodWorks also hosted a sold-out WoodWorks Innovation Network (WIN) event where speaker Dan Whalen, VP of Design & Development for Harbor Bay Real Estate, the team behind Cleveland’s INTRO, shared how the developer achieved one of the largest mass timber projects in the United States.

Now more than a month since the event, economic headwinds persist and the mass timber sector continues to evolve—and strengthen. Considering the opportunities presented by market share capture in this space, SLB will continue to direct program teams to reinforce the value of mass timber systems to practitioners and influencers within a thriving, resilient market.

Think Wood held the largest single booth space, placed at the center of the hall, making room for the newly redesigned Think Wood Mobile Tour—which had debuted earlier in the year at the International Builders’ Show—and produced an estimated 500 in-person engagements.

Think Wood and SLB Education sponsored various elements of the event, including the heavily used networking lounge and student entries of mass timber building designs.
