In 2025, the SLB launched targeted initiatives to level up mass timber knowledge among construction managers—a critical segment
but one that is historically underexposed to lumber-based and hybrid structural systems. The SLB’s first mass timber construction management challenge was introduced at
the ASC Region 3 Great Lakes Conference, embedding lumber into contractor-judged, client-based competitions and bringing real-world estimating and coordination scenarios into the learning environment.
“The Softwood Lumber Board’s funding and facilitation of ASC's construction management student competition enables the introduction of mass timber to a wide array of universities and students,” says Anthony Mirando, Associate Professor of Construction Management at Kent State University’s College of Architecture & Environmental Design. “Their exposure to real projects, coupled with the rigor of preparing a bid and presentation to industry professionals, provides an invaluable learning experience, reducing future learning curves and enhancing education.”
The SLB also invested in training instructors who teach future construction managers. A construction management-focused workshop hosted by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry equipped 25 faculty from across the country with practical tools covering codes, supply chains, costing, and on-site execution, helping ensure lumber-based structural systems are taught in ways that translate directly to jobsite delivery.
