To help building officials permit mass timber projects in jurisdictions that have not yet adopted the latest code provisions, the AWC has released a new National Mass Timber Alternative Materials and Methods (AMM) Guide.

Many states and local jurisdictions are still using building codes based on model versions that are more than six years old—often predating the mass timber–specific provisions in the International Building Code. The AMM Guide offers updated language from the 2024 IBC, giving code officials the tools they need to evaluate projects using established AMM processes.

The national guide builds on the success of AWC’s Florida-specific version released last year. With 40 states—or states with local jurisdictions—now having adopted the 2021 or 2024 IBC mass timber provisions, the AMM guides encourage further adoption of mass timber by supporting officials’ access to and familiarity with mass timber provisions in the newer I-codes. Access the AMM guides on the AWC’s website.
